
Santogold has seriously been getting a lot of press recently, and for good reason. It would be easy to dismiss her as a wannabe M.I.A. (and you would at least have evidence to support this; see above photo, as well as the fact that she's used the same producers - Switch & Diplo - for some of her tracks).
Just listening to the album erases that argument. Could L.E.S. Artistes ever be an M.I.A. track? Me no think so. Also, although Santogold has the aura of the same kind of world-blend album that Kala turned out to be, it's not quite so in-your-face. By Santi's own admission, the album touches on a number of different genres, but the main thing driving each song is the hooks, and there's no doubt that a single listen to each song will result in a line or two being embedded in your brain for at least two hours.
In that same Lipster interview I just linked to, they make a point about genres. Santogold as R&B? Maybe it's time we got rid of genres forever...
